Friday Mixtape: October 9, 2015 (CMJ Edition)

CMJ

Throughout the week I keep track of all the new songs that I heard and love and every Friday I put them all here. Most of these songs are brand new, but sometimes I’ll miss a song from before and finally hear it this week.

This week’s Friday Mixtape is a little different: instead of new songs, I’m sharing 10 artists that I’m most excited to see during CMJ next week. Some of these artists you already know, other you may not, but you should try and catch them all live. For the full list of CMJ 2015 acts click here.

NO ICE – “Eat This Heart (Summer Version)”

This Brooklyn group is a part of the Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen DIY collective and they specialize in beautiful Wear-Your-heart-On-Your-Drunken-N-Stoned-Sleeve rock & roll. In a music scene that’s full of Beach House wannabes, theses guys are refreshing.

10/13 @ Muchmore’s

Perfect Pussy – “I”

This band doesn’t need an introduction, but just know that they’ll be performing all throughout CMJ. And apparently they have a new album coming out soon, so maybe you’ll hear new material?

10/14 @ Santos Partyhouse

Car Seat Headrest – “Something Soon”

This Will Toledo project has be getting a lot of good press lately, so you’ll want to see them play now before they get bigger. A lot of people are throwing around Guided By Voices comparison (good), but I’d also argue that they sound like lo-fi Killers (also good).

10/14 @ Santos Partyhouse

10/16 @ Rough Trade

10/17 @ Space Ninety 8

Juan Wauters – “Todo Terminó”

This Queens singer-songwriter made one of my favorite albums of 2015 so far, which is enough for me. Make sure he’s on your radar.

10/14 @ Knitting Factory

Diet Cig – “Sleep Talk”

This is another band that doesn’t need much of an introduction. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to see them play this week, so you have no excuse.

10/14 @ Cake Shop

10/17 @ Knitting Factory

10/18 @ Palisades

Yung – “Nobody Cares”

The great Denmark band will be joining us stateside next week. I’ve heard great things about their live show. If they sound as good as they do on their record then I’m sold.

10/14 @ Santos Party House

Mitski – “Townie”

If you live in Brooklyn you’ve probably already seen her live, or at least you’ve heard of her. If you’re visiting from out of town, seeing her play is one of your top priorities.

10/15 @ Mercury Lounge

10/16 @ The Lutheran Church of the Messiah

Acid Dad – “Grim”

I just started listening to Acid Dad. You should start listening to Acid Dad. We should all go see Acid Dad next week. Great, see you there.

10/13 @ Good Room

10/15 @ Our Wicked Lady

10/16 @ The Wick

The Britanys – “City Boys”

I saw this band play at last year’s CMJ and they were loud and a lot of fun to watch. They’re also a part of the Mama Coco’s collective and they write great fuzzy guitar songs that’ll make you dance.

10/16 @ The Wick

10/17 @ Black Bear Bar

The Lemon Twigs – “Soothe”

I’ve written about this band before, but nothing I write can do their live show justice. This might be the band that’ll surprise you the most at this year’s CMJ.

10/16 @ Rough Trade

As a bonus, there’s an unofficial AdHoc Car Wash that’s happening all day Saturday (10/17) starting at noon. Destruction Unit, Perfect Pussy, Porches, LVL UP, Downtown Boys, Pity Sex, Potty Mouth, Protomartyr, Sheer Mag, and Whitney will all be playing. Click here for more info.

And I won’t be posting all next week due to CMJ-related activities. Happy CMJ everyone!

My Favorite Albums And Songs Of 2015 (So Far)

2015 2

This isn’t so much a list of the few albums and songs that I loved more than anything else in 2015 as it is a list of the music that I’ve listened to the most and have the strongest associations to this year. When I think of 2015, I think of these albums and songs.

Also, to say that the following albums and songs are “the best” is dumb, so I’m going to say that these are my favorites of 2015 so far aka some music from 2015 that you should check out if you haven’t already.

Here are my 10 favorite albums, in alphabetical order:

Alabama Shakes – ‘Sound & Color’

And here are my 20 favorite songs, in alphabetical order. To make things more interesting, I didn’t include any songs that came from any of my favorite albums (because most of those songs would be on this list).

Beach Slang – “Too Late to Die Young”

Best Coast – “Feeling Ok”

Carly Rae Jepsen – “I Really Like You”

Chromatics – “I Can Never Be Myself When You’re Around”

Colleen Green – “TV”

Craig Finn – “Newmyer’s Roof”

Dawes – “Don’t Send Me Away”

Desaparecidos – “MariKKKopa”

Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment – “Sunday Candy”

Downtown Boys – “Dancing In The Dark”

Hop Along – tie between “The Knock” and “Happy to See Me”

Hot Chip – “Huarache Lights”

Kacey Musgraves – “Dime Store Cowgirl”

Leon Bridges – “Smooth Sailin'”

Panda Bear – “Mr. Noah”

(The single came out last October, but I heard it for the first time when I listened to this year’s ‘Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper’, so I’m including it on this list.)

Sam Outlaw – “Jesus Take the Wheel (And Drive Me to a Bar)”

Sufjan Stevens – “Death with Dignity”

Titus Andronicus – “Dimed Out”

Tobias Jesso Jr. – “True Love”

(note: this song technically wasn’t on ‘Goon’, so I don’t feel bad about including TJJ on here)

And in case you missed it, here’s a Spotify playlist that I update throughout the year of all the songs that I like this year.
