What better way to end 2014 than to give out some superlatives? As with any sort of end-of-year review, these awards reflect my personal taste and shouldn’t be taken as the final say on the year. Really my hope is that you’ll check out some new music that that you’d otherwise miss.
Also, make sure to click on the album cover for a link to a song off that album.
Alright, let’s begin.

In 1988 Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne formed the Traveling Wilburys and released their debut album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. The first song off the album is “Handle with Care” and it became one their most popular songs in their short career (Orbison died right before a proper follow up could be recorded).
In 2006, Jenny Lewis recorded her own cover of “Handle with Care” for her album Rabbit Fur Coat with The Watson Twins, Conor Oberst, Ben Gibbard, and M. Ward. These are two very different music supergroups from different eras, yet each version is great.
This month’s spotify playlist includes new songs from Ryan Adams, La Hell Gang, Morrissey, Reigning Sound and Spoon, plus songs from Aimee Mann, Colossus, Kurt Vile and more.
For the music video for the excellent “Just One Of The Guys”, Jenny Lewis gets a little help from a few famous friends, including Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart, Brie Larson, and a bunch of “guys” in mustaches.
The new album The Voyager, produced by Ryan Adams (!), comes out tomorrow.
