This new playlist combines many of the songs from the Garden State and Scrubs soundtracks in addition to some other songs that I think match Braff’s great range of taste in music. There are also some songs on here from his new movie Wish I Was Here released in limited release July 18th.

Spotify-Logo

The month of August: back to school, back to college football, back to Breaking Bad, and back to listening to some cool tunes. This month’s playlist includes two bands that have “deer” in their names, I finally watch Wes Anderson’s Rushmore, and I pay tribute to The Postal Service and J.J. Cale.

Here are 20 songs for August 2013.

Playlist: 20 Songs From April 2013 (Via Spotify)

Spotify-Logo

Well April marked the final days of winter – we still had snow in Indiana at the beginning of the month – which means I was on my annual National kick during the ugly transition between winter and spring (and because they have a new album coming out!). There was also plenty of great new music from James Blake, Kurt Vile, Daft Punk, Fall Out Boy, Iron And Wine, and Phoenix.

Here are my 20 songs from April 2013.

This month’s playlist is all over the place.  Most of these songs are oldies, but there are a few new tracks here.  I have some Springsteen, Death Cab, Magnetic Fields, The Men, and everything else in between.

Here are my 15 songs for March 2012.

My Top 10 Favorite Cover Songs

Recently Rolling Stone posted a reader’s poll of the top 1o cover songs – you can view that list here.

The list was pretty decent, covering most of the stable cover songs – i.e. Hendrix’s take on “All Along The Watchtower,”
Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah,” and Johnny Cash’s haunting “Hurt.”  However, there are plenty of other great covers that aren’t as popular but are just as good, if not better, than the original.  So here’s my personal list, not in any particular order, and a video of each cover.

Heartbeats – Jose Gonzalez (The Knives)

Dancing In The Dark – Pete Yorn (Bruce Springsteen)

Wonderwall – Ryan Adams (Oasis)

River – Herbie Hancock (Joni Mitchell)

Such Great Heights – Iron & Wine (The Postal Service)

Romeo and Juliet – Matt Nathanson (Dire Straits)

Love Me Tender – Norah Jones (Elvis Presley)

Hey Ya – Obadiah Parker (Outkast)

I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You – Hootie & The Blowfish (Tom Waits)

Imagine – Jack Johnson (John Lennon)

Any songs I left out?  Comment and let me know what your favorite cover songs are.

Double Feature: Iron & Wine – “Big Burned Hand”

One song by Samuel Beam aka Iron & Wine.  Two versions.  One electric and funky.  One acoustic.  Both sound like completely different songs.  This is awesome.

The actual acoustic song is around 4:40, but the whole video is great.
