spotify-512

The holiday season is a great time to justify many things, from eating too much, to waiting too long in line at the mall to get a good deal, to drinking a little too much eggnog while your extended family comes over. But there is no such thing as too much Christmas music. I’ve made for y’all a Spotify playlist that contains over two hours of the classics (and hidden gems) of this special genre.

Here is my ultimate Spotify Christmas playlist. Happy holidays!

Playlist: Americana Driving Music

I’m going to cheat a little bit for this playlist.  Some of the songs here are not from American musicians and not all the songs are what I consider to be Americana music.  However, what all these songs have in common is that they are all great songs to go driving to when surrounded by nature.  If it’s rainy, sunny, cloudy, or any other type of weather, I find that these songs have a kind of clarity in them that make you see your surroundings more and the music fits with the scenery.

Wilco – “Either Way”

Bob Dylan – “Workingman’s Blues #2”

The Band – “The Weight”

Counting Crows – “Friend of the Devil”

The Head and the Heart – “Down in the Valley”

Ryan Adams – “Oh My Sweet Carolina”

Ryan Adams – “Dear John (Follow The Lights EP version)

Billy Bragg and Wilco – “Birds and Ships”

The Decemberist – “The Crane Wife 3”

Fleet Foxes – “Helplessness Blues”

Neil Young – “After The Gold Rush”

Nic Jones – “Canadee – I – O”

Bob Dylan – “Girl From The North Country”

Herbie Hancock – “River”

Wilco – “Jesus, Etc.”

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit – “Codeine”

You’ll find that all these songs fit nicely with the songs I enjoy driving down to Bloomington to.

My Top 10 Favorite Cover Songs

Recently Rolling Stone posted a reader’s poll of the top 1o cover songs – you can view that list here.

The list was pretty decent, covering most of the stable cover songs – i.e. Hendrix’s take on “All Along The Watchtower,”
Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah,” and Johnny Cash’s haunting “Hurt.”  However, there are plenty of other great covers that aren’t as popular but are just as good, if not better, than the original.  So here’s my personal list, not in any particular order, and a video of each cover.

Heartbeats – Jose Gonzalez (The Knives)

Dancing In The Dark – Pete Yorn (Bruce Springsteen)

Wonderwall – Ryan Adams (Oasis)

River – Herbie Hancock (Joni Mitchell)

Such Great Heights – Iron & Wine (The Postal Service)

Romeo and Juliet – Matt Nathanson (Dire Straits)

Love Me Tender – Norah Jones (Elvis Presley)

Hey Ya – Obadiah Parker (Outkast)

I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You – Hootie & The Blowfish (Tom Waits)

Imagine – Jack Johnson (John Lennon)

Any songs I left out?  Comment and let me know what your favorite cover songs are.
