Sure we all want to be The Clash and Sex Pistols, but how about actually sounding like them? To have that same sense of urgency and smirk? That’s the classic British punk sound and feel I hear from Istanbul’s Project Youth. I really enjoy all of Middle East for its politicalness and its desire to sound fun and alive. It feels like this group is on a mission to do something, even if that mission is just to destroy or declare that nothing matters. How punk.
There’s a lot going on in “FSU” – a dark smokey room, a cryptic piano, tight Nine Inch Nails-like percussion, ’80s New Wave sound bits, a dancer, and a dude (Istanbul’s Berkay Özideş) in a robe singing while trying out for the next Assassin’s Creed movie. This is one of those cases where you need to watch while also listening.
The idea behind Le Tour Du Monde is inspiring for couples looking for a reason to travel: A Brazilian couple, Lucas Mayer and Iris Fuzaro, collaborates and records with different musicians in the streets of famous cities around the world to make albums capturing each location’s unique atmosphere. Previous cities include Athens, Tokyo, and Bali. “Messy Hari,” my favorite of all the recordings, was recorded in Istanbul with vocalists Deniz Tekin and santurist Mete Çiftçi.
