Music Journal: February Recap – The Super Bowl and The Grammys – Pleasantly Underwhelming

I have to be honest, February was a hectic month for me.  On the 15th I was initiated as a brother to the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Indiana Alpha chapter.  I am extremely proud to be a Phi, but being inducted, along with all my college midterms, did not allow me to catch up with the world of music.  But honestly I felt like nothing much happened this month.  But for the sake of this recap, let’s see what I can nit pick from this month.

The Super Half Time Show was…..meh

This year’s performance was wonderfully forgettable.  Madonna was an excellent lip singer, the special effects were well done, and I forgot what songs were performed by the 4th quarter.  M.I.A. tried to make a statement with a quick flip of the middle finger to the camera, but this is not 2007 so nobody really cares about what she says anyone.  Hey, at lest the Giants beat the Patriots.  Plus, no Super Bowl show could top this one….

The Grammys Went Exactly As Planned

I did not have time to watch the Grammys, but this year I didn’t need to.  Everyone that I thought was going to win did, so there were no upsets that I missed.  I’m glad Adele won all her awards, 21 is a great pop album, and I’m glad Kanye West and Bon Iver came home with some trophies.  I will say though that Bon Iver, as awesome as he is, is not a “new artist”.  I don’t think I’m alone when I say that the best new artist award needs to be changed.

Album Of The Month: Mr. Dream – Fatherland EP

A solid six song set that has introduced me to a band that has a good looking future ahead of them.  Check out these guys on tour as they open up for Cloud Nothings.

Song I Listened To The Most This Month: Jason Isbell – “Streetlights (Acoustics)”

When I saw Ryan Adams in Louisville (which was awesome!) I saw saw the excellent Jason Isbell perform some songs off his latest solo album and from his former band the Drive-By Truckers.  The highlight was an acoustic version of “Streetlights”, which has been on repeat all month.

Well that was pretty much all I remember from this month.  Hopefully more excitement will happen in March – we have a new Springsteen album to look forward to!
